Blaster

Blaster: The only true mushroom style popping corn available in Australia.

Blaster forms as an integral partner to the industry leading Thunderpop butterfly popcorn in HSR's stable. Blaster, a new true Mushroom variety holds an 85% mushroom flake style.

Characteristics:

  • High yielding
  • Strong single stalk plant style
  • Good cold tolerance and early seedling vigour
  • Hybrid seed lots will have a seed count of 6000 - 7000 seeds per kilogram
  • Suitable for cooking in microwave, oil and air poppers
  • Ideal for caramelising and heavy coating in the confectionary trade
  • Expansions of greater than 36 cubic centimetres / gram are commercial for this variety, (Important to note that mushroom style popping corn does not expand to the same level as butterfly types, due to their more compact rounded flake style)
  • Flake style large mushroom, (generally more than 85%)
  • Flake colour is a clean white
  • Low levels of un-popped kernels (old maids)
  • Large grain type 55 to 65 kernels / 10 grams, (grain size will vary with growing conditions)
  • Grain colour is dark yellow to orange
  • Freely attached glume sheds well when cleaning
  • Recommended expansion moisture is 13 - 14.2%

Under irrigated conditions planting populations should be between 65,000 - 80,000 established plants per hectare. Dry land recommended planting populations would vary depending on rainfall and location. (Recommended to plant at similar populations to maize crops in the area. Generally between 35,000 - 50,000 established plants per hectare.)
